    Abstract

    The Burundi 2019-2020 Socioeconomic Survey presents a detailed dataset on the socioeconomic conditions of refugees in Burundi. Conducted alongside the UNHCR's Verification Exercise, it leveraged the UNHCR and the Government of Burundi's database, selecting a systematic random sample. The survey utilized Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) for data collection, with questionnaires covering a wide range of topics like household characteristics, education, employment, and access to services. Initially conducted through in-person interviews, the survey adapted to phone interviews due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fieldwork involved three teams from mid-November 2019 to May 2020, with extensive training and supervision to ensure data quality. The questionnaire, primarily in English, was administered with interpreters when necessary. Additionally, uniform sample weights were estimated for each household based on their selection probability, and sensitivity checks were performed to validate the data's robustness. This dataset is crucial for understanding the complex socioeconomic dynamics faced by refugees in Burundi.

    Sampling Procedure

    The Burundi 2019-20 Socioeconomic Survey used a systematic random sampling method, drawing from a sample frame of 75,011 refugee households identified during the UNHCR's Verification Exercise (VRX). The sample included both refugees in urban areas and those in camps. To ensure representativeness, sampling weights were applied to account for variations in household size, geographic location, and the mode of data collection (in-person or phone interviews). Adjustments were made for non-responses and incomplete interviews, and separate weights were calculated for households based on whether they were interviewed face-to-face or via phone due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The final sample was proportionally adjusted to reflect the total number of households in each location, ensuring that the findings were representative of the broader refugee population in Burundi.

    The data collection for the Burundi 2019-20 Socioeconomic Survey was primarily conducted using Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI). This method was chosen to enhance data quality, eliminate the need for manual data entry, enable near real-time monitoring of data collection, and facilitate the timely release of results. The SES questionnaire, designed using the KoBo Toolbox, included individual-level modules covering household member characteristics, education, employment, vulnerabilities, concerns, dwelling characteristics, asset ownership, access to services, and perceptions of social cohesion. It also featured skip patterns to ensure efficiency and clarity during interviews by avoiding unnecessary questions. Although the questionnaires were in English, enumerators either interpreted the questions themselves or used interpreters for translation during the interviews. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person interviews were supplemented by phone interviews to ensure the continuation of data collection.
